FOCUS AND REFOCUSING PLANS

To be prepared as possible, and to experience as few setbacks as possible, top traders develop an effective on-site focus plan and a personal refocusing plan.

An on-site focusing plan usually includes your preferred pre-performance and performance focus. It also outlines the sequence of events you will go through from the time you arrive at the office to the time you finish your day. Your refocusing plan lists potential problems or distractions that could arise and your proposed means of avoiding, minimising, or coping with each.

Completing your Focus Plans

Four questions should be thought out, planned, and practised before the trading day:

  • How do I want to focus?
  • What should I do to get into that focus?
  • Why should I do it?
  • What should I do if it doesn’t work?

A 5th of question – how did it go? – lets you assess your effectiveness in implementing your plan and should be answered after the day.

How do I want to focus?

  • What is my best performance focus for trading?
  • How do I want to feel going into the office?
  • How do I want to focus at my desk?
  • What should I do to get into that focus?
  • What will help me enter my preferred focus?
