A trader can be an entity or individual who participates in financial markets by way of buying or selling instruments in stocks, commodities, bonds, foreign exchange, or derivatives. There are many more markets but these are the most commonly traded. A trader uses the financial markets for various reasons such as speculation, arbitrage, hedging or as an agent (a broker for example). We will explain the various markets later in the course but for now let’s concentrate on understanding the roles of a trader.
Firstly, in finance language or in the news you will hear the words investors and traders but it’s important to understand that these are two very different terms when used in financial trading. Both may have interaction in the market place but they are fundamentally two different activities yet they both play an important role in financial market operations. So what is the difference?
